I love the brilliant rendition of subjects in twentieth century art that are loosely painted but with hidden precision, including works by Sargeant, Sorolla, Schmid, Guzik, and Kreutz. I draw my inspirations, as they did, from early twentieth architecture, the art deco and Greek classical styles of buildings in the cities, and from country farms, weather worn beaches, and broad meadows slowly disappearing as progress takes its toll. I love the idea of capturing what's left of a bygone era and recording it before it’s gone forever.
For every country farm, dilapidated old barn, and rusty farm machinery, there is a developer ready to buy up the land, divide it into tiny plots, and construct cheap cookie-cutter houses. For every foot of weathered beachfront, there is a developer applying for a permit to build massive condominium complexes. For every broad expanse of grassy meadow and wooded forest, there is a developer ready to install a strip mall or center. Before they are all gone, I want to capture as many of them as I can with paint and canvas.
